Hi, I’m Sage.
I’m the person behind ShotBySage, usually somewhere near a stage, crouched in an inconvenient place, or getting far too close to something with a camera.
My first experience with photography was at college, while I was studying Forensic Sciences. Somewhere along the way, I got hold of a cheap, slightly damaged camera and completely fell in love with it.
I still use that camera now.
I officially started doing photography in January, and since then, I’ve spent a lot of time figuring out what I actually love photographing.
Turns out, the answer is mostly people being themselves.
The way I see it
My favourite photographs usually aren't the ones where someone is perfectly posed and staring down the lens.
I like the moments in between.
People laughing, concentrating, moving, performing, talking, existing. The version of someone that feels most like them.
That’s probably why I love photographing live music so much. Nobody is standing around waiting for me to tell them what to do. They're busy playing, performing and getting lost in what they're doing — and I get to capture it as it happens.
I naturally seem to gravitate towards close-up, intimate photographs too. I like getting close enough to a moment that it feels like you were actually there.
What it’s like working with me
I'm usually quiet at first.
Give me a little bit of time, though, and there's a reasonable chance I won't shut up.
I'm neurodivergent and disabled myself, so making things work for the person in front of my camera matters to me.
That means no pressure to be constantly “on”, no pretending you're comfortable when you're not, and no problem with taking breaks, changing plans, slowing things down or doing things differently.
I'll give direction when it helps, but I don't want to turn you into a mannequin. The goal isn't to make everyone look the same.
It's to get photographs that feel like you.
So, that's me.
Still learning. Still experimenting. Still carrying around a cheap damaged camera that I probably should have replaced by now.
I photograph music, people, performance, community, strange little moments and whatever else ends up happening in front of me.
I think that's the fun part.
